Laptop Will Not Hibernate

October 12, 2005 Art Zemon

Windows - System Error, insufficient system resources exist to complete the API This is so frustrating. I have this nifty new laptop that I have upgraded to 1.25 GB of memory and it will not hibernate. Virtually all of the time, I get a bubble that says, “Windows – System Error, insufficient system resources exist to complete the API,” just like in this screen snapshot which I bummed from Bryce Yehl’s blog where he discusses exactly the same problem.

If you run across a solution to this, I’d sure like to hear about it!

This is killing me, too; I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 with 1.5 GB RAM and WinXP Pro SP2. Please let me know if you hear of a solution.

Although this is an old forum, I know this is still a common problem. I think I have finally figured out a solution, for those that need it. I have a Gateway MA7 (MT6821), which I upgrade from 1GB of ram to 2GB of ram and suddenly I could not hibernate. I suspected that the pagefile had something to do with this. I disabled (unchecked “enable hibernate support”) in the Power Options tab (easily accessed through the the ScreenSaver Selection screen). Then I set my page file size to “System Managed.” I then restarted. After I restarted, I re-enabled (checked) the “Enable Hibernate Support” option and I set my pagefile to 1.5 times my system memory size (in my case: 3072MB min/initial and 4096MB max). I then restarted again, and ‘voila’ I could once again hibernate! I hope this helps, not sure if it’s a fix for all situations.

Here it is, almost three years after you posted this, and I found myself with the same “will not hibernate” problem. I repeated your steps listed above, and I now hibernate with the best of them.

    Thanks
