Time for another big technology leap. I am switching from a desktop to a laptop as my full time machine. Until Saturday morning, I had had a desktop machine and a laptop. The laptop died a horrible and inconvenient death, though. (Now all it says when I boot is, “Trap 00000006 Exception.”)
Rather than buy a replacement laptop and continue to keep two computers in sync with the same versions of all the software, same patches, etc, I replaced the laptop with a “desktop replacement,” the HP Pavilion zd8205us Notebook PC from Circuit City.
The zd8000 is a beast, heavy and hot. But, so far, I am thoroughly enjoying having all of my desktop files available to me as I sit in my easy chair in my living room. The screen is simply gorgeous and the dual-core Pentium CPU is screaming fast.
I also picked up an xb2000 expansion base (mislabeled an “xb200” on Circuit City’s web site). Dropping the notebook into the base gives me a wireless keyboard and mouse, raises the laptop’s monitor to the level of a real monitor, and connects the computer to power, the printer, better speakers, etc.
This is one more step along the path to being able to pick up my business and operate where-ever the urge draws me. I’ll keep you posted.
How is this working for you? I currently write to you from my HP Pavilion xd7000, which is/was my secondary computer. I had done a technology leap of my own with my desktop, going from a Dell 8200 to a Systemax Ventura. The Ventura was two months old when it caught fire the other day…….yes, I know, no one has ever heard of this. Well, it happened. I’m rethinking my life now and considering a second laptop to replace my desktop and keep my husband with the option to take one of them when he needs to. I’m loving working from laptop, not surrounded by wires and noise as I make this decision. You can see why a search brought up your article! Thanks for any input you have to offer……Internet speed is my only concern.
Nicki,
Thanks for writing your comment. I had not realized that it has been over four months since I switched.
I am completely pleased with the laptop. I have even taken it on the road, using it as both computer and VOIP phone for a week.
I did recently add a 250 GB hard drive to the xb2000 expansion base.
