The discussion on one of my favorite mailing lists has turned toward nostalgic reminisces of the golden days of technology, including antique floppy disks and RT-11 cheat sheets. Scott Adams then made my morning with this strip (and a very merry Christmas to you, Scott!): Since I can’t fight it, I might as well wallow […]
CIA WTF?!
From the it-makes-me-proud-to-be-a-taxpayer department comes the news, reported by the Washington Post, that the CIA has launched a task force to asses the impact of the WikiLeaks exposure of hundreds of thousands of US diplomatic cables. And the name of the task force (drum roll, please) is: WikiLeaks Task Force! Yup, you read it right: […]
Google’s eBookstore: Yay! eBook Licenses: Boo!
Google’s new eBookstore is open for business, selling over three million books. This is great news. I like books and I like technology and I like competition. I particularly like the partnership which Google has forged with local bricks and mortar bookstores, allowing the stores to sell ebooks through their own web sites. I will […]
Jingle Bell Run 5K
I ran my second 5K this morning, the Jingle Bell Run to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. I signed up for the race with two goals in mind: I wanted to raise over $1,000 for the Arthritis Foundation and I wanted to better my 5K time from the first race that I ran in October. Kudos […]
Help Needed for the Arthritis Foundation
Do you know anybody who has arthritis? I thought so. Me too. I need your help. I am dressing up in green & red, tying bells on my shoes, running the Jingle Bell 5K tomorrow morning, November 21, to support the Arthritis Foundation. So far there are 17 of us the the Cheerful Curmudgeons team. […]
That Comfy Small Town Feeling
I remember how nice it was, after I moved from Chicago to Valparaiso, IN, that I could tell someone my name and he knew where I lived. It was a small town. We all knew where pretty much everybody lived. One time, just to see what would happen, I sent a letter to my step-father […]
B-25 Pumpkin Drop / Bombing Run
Great fun was to be had at St. Charles Flying Service’s second annual pumpkin drop at St. Charles County Smartt Airport this afternoon. The festivities were opened with a cluster bombing run by “Show Me”, the B-25 based on the field. I did take my shot at the target but, as expected, found that a […]
Software Jobs
By day, I own a software company and occasionally write software. Wally, Dilbert’s friend, reveals all about my job in today’s strip. Click the image to read the whole comic. The disturbing question is: Which job do I hold???
Running #7, My First 5K
I just completed my first 5K race, the Cottleville Fall Run! I left the house with a simple goal: finish the race. From the practicing that I have been doing, I figured that it would take me around 40 minutes, not stellar but I would not be hauling my sorry *ss over the finish line […]
Running #6, Goal Achieved
I achieved my goal this morning and ran (more than) 30 minutes without a break! I would have run 40 but my left calf was tightening up. I didn’t want it to cramp so I quit running after about 37 minutes and walked home. I’ll try again on Tuesday morning. My next goal is to […]
Running #5, A Day of Surprises
It does not seem like a month since I started running but, sure enough, I wrote Now I’m a Runner back on July 20. This week I am up to running five minutes then walking five minutes (repeated three times, for a total of 30 minutes). A month ago, I could not have run for […]

Cluster Ballooning
Jonathan Trappe has discovered real flying, under a cluster of helium balloons. He took off from Oshkosh, Wisconsin last month, flew across Lake Michigan (overnight), and landed in Michigan, near Kalamazoo. Sign me up! This looks like more fun than a barrel of monkeys. [Updated 8/19/2010 to insert a missing title.]
Powered Parachutes and Ultralights
I spent most of my time at AirVenture 2010 hanging out in the ultralight area. I headed down there first to learn about weight shift trikes, after talking to the folks from Evolution Trikes while on a fuel stop in Juneau, WI. I had been impressed with the versatility of these craft. With completely open […]
Pulse 50
I guess all this running and walking is good for me after all. I had my annual physical today and learned that my resting pulse rate is down to 50. The new hybrid cars like the Ford Fusion shut their engines down completely at stop signs. I wonder if I can do that, too. 🙂
Getting to AirVenture 2010
Getting to AirVenture this year proved to be much more difficult than I ever would have dreamed. Chris Seto, who is also in EAA chapter 32 with me, and I planned to fly up to Oshkosh on Sunday morning, July 25. This is not a very difficult trip in my Arrow, especially since I have […]
Be Your Child’s Biggest Cheerleader
As I was running the other morning, I jogged past a mom who was shepherding her little ones out the front door and over to the school bus stop. The mother was a few steps behind her young daughter and I caught this snippet of conversation: Mom: You have a spelling test today, Susan. I […]
Running #4
I got there! When I first started running and stretching, I started doing the canonical hamstring stretch after each run. Close your eyes and picture, if you will, graceful and youthful me lithely stretching toward my oh so distant toes and failing miserably to achieve that oh so distant goal. My fingertips lingered in mid-air […]
US Troops Returning Home from Iraq
I love to start my day with an uplifting tidbit of news like this: Barack Obama is bringing all but 50,000 US troops home from Iraq at the end of this month. US President Barack Obama has confirmed the end of all combat operations in Iraq by 31 August. Some 50,000 of 65,000 US troops currently […]
Running #3
I ran again, yesterday; third time this week. All is still going well. I can sure feel the workout in various parts of my body but no pain, just aches from working parts of me that have not worked since dirt was new. This one was longer. I ran/walked for most of an hour and […]
