Once upon a time, Rabbi James Stone Goodman introduced me to Turkish coffee in which he infused some cardamom. In today’s vernacular, OMG was that good!
A few months later, I was listening to the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack and wondered what coffee was like in eastern Europe and Russia back in the day. A bit of Googling led me to some spice recipes that folks used to add to coffee to make it a bit special.
Candy and I did a bit of experimenting and came up with our recipe, which I offer to you now.
- 4 parts ground cinnamon
- 2 parts ground cardamom
- 2 parts ground ginger
- 1 part ground clove
We mix up a bunch and then add 1/8 teaspoon to each cup that we make in our AeroPress. On weekends only, when we want to slow down and make it a bit special.
BTW, I shamelessly borrowed this delicious cup of coffee from Consumer Reports How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Coffee. Go support CR; it’s a great organization.

I passed it on to the really serious coffee drinkers in the family. I’ve been a subscriber to Consumers for years. Thanks
