Welcoming Robin Hood the Red Lored Parrot

We have adopted a new family member, Robin Hood, the red lored Amazon parrot. Click the picture or click here to see more photos and a video. Robin Hood is an absolute delight, loving attention and company but being (usually) patient when he does not get to be in the same room with us. Some of his favorite activities seem to be having his head scritched (like a dog), standing on my dresser and throwing my comb on the floor (so I can retrieve it for another toss), and showers.

Whoever raised and trained him did a beautiful job socializing him. As long as new people move slowly, Robin Hood is happy to perch on anyone’s hand and chirple merrily away, holding up his end of the conversation with psitticine alacrity. He does not talk in recognizable English but that doesn’t bother him a bit. When we laugh, he gets all worked up and laughs with us (or has much to say about the joke). If Candy is in the other room and I raise my voice to talk to her, Robin Hood easily outdoes me in volume and verve.
