Getting Closer to the Tail

October 2, 2012 Art Zemon

Over the last month, I have been working steadily on the pieces which will mount and control the horizontal part of the tail of my BD-4C airplane. Since I last wrote about the Horizontal Stabilator Push-Pull Tube, I have fitted the two weldments to the tail of the fuselage, like this:

Horizontal stabilator weldment (1)
Horizontal stabilator weldment in the full nose down position.
Horizontal stabilator weldment (2)
Horizontal stabilator weldment, more than full nose up. Once the plane is assembled, this only needs to tilt up 15 degrees.

Once I had the weldments in place on the tail, I turned my attention back to the push-pull tubes and got them cut to final length and ready to install.

Front push-pull tube
The front push-pull tube runs from below the control sticks to the middle of the fuselage.
Rear push-pull tube
The rear push-pull tube runs from the middle of the fuselage to the tail and operates the horizontal stabilator.
Push-pull tube attached to weldment
Close-up of the rear push-pull tube attached to the weldment that will hold the horizontal stabilator.

Now I have the tubes back out of the airplane as I paint them and rework some of the pieces at the back of the fuselage so that the vertical stabilizer (what is often, mistakenly, called the “rudder”) will fit properly.
