Woo hoo! Just six years after Candy and I upgraded our stereo system to a 5.1 home theater system, we replaced the 27″ television with an Optoma HD72 projector. The picture we now see has diagonal measure of approximately 90″. The improvement is so dramatic that I could easily become a couch potato. Everything seems completely new, even if it is a movie that I have seen several times and know well. So far, I have been through parts of Star Wars IV, A New Hope and all of Young Frankenstein (what does it say about you when the first movie you watch end-to-end on your new projector was filmed in black and white?) and Shrek and two IMAX presentations, The Dream is Alive and Destiny in Space, and bits of Fantasia and Lawrence of Arabia and Matrix.
The best surprise? The HD72 is bright enough that we can comfortably use it even in the afternoon, although our den is certainly not lightproof.
I took a few snapshots of the set-up. (Don’t get your hopes cranked up for quality; these are hand held in a darkish room.) I still need to find something to hide the cables running up the wall to the projector. If you have ideas, please let me know.
Finally, ProjectorReviews.com has a good review of the HD72, as does ProjectorCentral.com.
Gotta run. Time to take a shower and go to work. Well, maybe I can get in a quick cartoon and then go to work. Maybe I can call in sick….
