Deadprogrammer’s Cafe has a wonderful posting titled Amdahl : Business in the Front, Party in the Back which includes photos of a board out of an old Amdahl 470 mainframe. That was the first “large” computer that I ever used, at the University of Michigan in 1976.
Ahhh… those were the days. 😉 Those of us who where in the computer engineering program wouldn’t even start heading to the computing center until after 9:00pm. Before then, there were to many LSA students doing their homework and we couldn’t get to the keypunches. And even if we had our jobs punched and bothered to submit them, the Amdahl was so bogged down that it would take forever to get the output back.
Who would have thunk that in less than 30 years, I would be sitting in my easy chair, typing this on a personal computer with more power than that mainframe had.
