Aileron Support Brackets

May 15, 2013 Art Zemon

Having completed the mid-flap support brackets on the wings of my Bede BD-4C airplane, I continued working along the wing to the inboard aileron support bracket, which supports the outboard end of the flap and the inboard end of the aileron, and then to the outboard aileron support bracket. The outboard bracket was easy; it is at the end of the wing and everything is easy to reach. The inboard bracket was tricky because I had to mount nutplates to the back of the rear spar… but the wing was already closed up and I had no access to the back of the rear spar. The solution was to cut an access hole in the spar and then work through that hole. (You can click on this photo, or any other, to see a larger version of the picture.)

Once the nutplates were riveted to the back of the spar, all I had to do was run a couple of bolts in to attach the bracket. This is just a temporary installation. I need to remove the bracket, press a bearing into it, and install the bracket with the right kind of bolt.

Here is a short of the back of the right wing. You can see three of the four brackets already installed.

Those photos are all of the right wing. I did the same thing on the left wing.

Mounting the outer aileron support bracket on the left wing was easy compared to the inboard brackets. I just made a doubler out of a piece of .032 inch aluminum, mounted a couple of nut plates, and bolted the bracket in place.

Next jobs: doing the outboard aileron support bracket for the right wing and then permanently installing both mid-flap support brackets with ProSeal and rivets.
